Overwatch Could Make Major Changes to Sombra

The developers of Overwatch aren’t hesitant to make major changes to the characters on the game’s roster if necessary, just recently giving Symmetra her second major rework. The team seems to be testing these kinds of changes on a regular basis, and as it turns out, the next character who may get a rework is none other than hacker extraordinaire Sombra.

Sombra, a Damage class character in Overwatch, is known for her ability to turn invisible and slip behind enemy lines. Since her introduction, this ability has been governed by a timer so that she can’t stay invisible forever. However, Blizzard is toying with the idea of making it so Sombra can stay invisible indefinitely.

Besides her invisibility tech, Sombra also has a gadget called the Translocator that allows her to teleport to it, which is useful for getting out of dangerous situations or reaching areas quickly. Like her invisibility, the Translocator has been governed by a timer, so players haven’t been able to simply leave it in one spot for an extended period of time. But also like Sombra’s invisibility, Blizzard is testing a version of the character where the Translocator doesn’t have a timer.

By removing the timers for both of Sombra’s abilities, some fans may be worried that the character will become overpowered. However, Blizzard is also looking into ways to make her more balanced. For example, Blizzard has suggested that her bonus movement speed while invisible will be cut from 75% to 50%, and that she won’t be able to challenge for objectives when invisible.

These caveats should make it so Sombra is balanced, but it’s possible that the changes will still make her feel overpowered. Of course, Blizzard will be sure to test these changes extensively before deciding to add them or not, and even if they are introduced, they will be tested in the PTR before coming to the main game.

Whether or not Blizzard decides to make these major changes to Sombra in Overwatch remains to be seen. Sombra fans should stand by for more information on that front in the coming weeks.

Overwatch is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
